How to remove tarnish from Sheila Fajl Earrings and Other Gold Plated Jewelry
Hi everyone,
I've had a pair of Sheila Fajl Hoop earrings for about 4 years, and always kept them in the pouch and closed as they recommended. But within a year of having them they started to darken and turn color. The gold plating naturally wears off and the brass underneath tarnishes easily. I tried to clean them with soapy water like the Sheila Fajl website suggests but that didn't really help the tarnish go away. So another thing I did was clean the earrings using aluminum foil, salt, baking soda, and hot water.
There are a lot of tutorials on how to do it on Youtube and it helped to clear the tarnish off the brass so the gold shines a little brighter.
I would only try this on silver, brass, gold, and jewelry that isn't coated in coloring (not real plating). This solution will strip the color and protective coating on costume jewelry. It works really well on plated sterling silver, I was able to restore a sterling silver necklace that turned black due to tarnish.
All you need is to cover a bowl with aluminum foil then microwave 1 cup of water for about 1 minute. Mix 1 tablespoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of baking soda in the bowl. Then pour the warm water in and mix it.
Submerge the tarnished jewelry in the solution for no more than 10 minutes. You can also dip it in for a few seconds and wipe the tarnished spots off, repeat until the piece is clean.
My Sheila Fajl earrings are a lot shinier looking and clean now. I also want to try lemon juice on the spots where the metal has oxidized to brighten them.
